Mini No. 4
This month I am a little behind in posting, however, I have been painting. I took part in a paint pledge this month which was very interesting. At the start of the month you state what you want to accomplish in the month and if you do complete the pledge you might get prize at the end. The first mini I pledged was the Warhammer Fantasy Stormcast Eternal.
Here is the assembled mini.
I decided to prime this one in white, mainly because I wanted the wings to be a white pink mix and because I really wanted the colours to pop!
I decided to take a slower different approach with this mini. It is a much larger mini than I am used to so I expect it to take much longer to paint. Since there is a lot going on and things would get in the way of my paint brush I decided to start and paint the most inner parts of the mini first and work my way out. I started with his face and belt.
As soon as I add the gold I am loving how the colours are coming together. The mini has a skirt belt thinngy I decided to go with purple. I did the same with the shoulder pads of the mini. Theres something about gold and purple that is really regal.
I covered all the armour in gold and then gave it a black wash. I tested it with a sepia wash too, but it was too warm. The black gave it a nice aged look.
Then it was time for some last bits and bobs. The sword at his side, belt and weapons. Also the ribbon that is floating around him. It looks sooooo good!! All I did was paint the ribbon really light brown and a sepia wash. As you can also see, I tried my best to add the gold detail at the top of the wings. This was tough. Its such fine detail, and since the wings are partly white I have to keep making sure that it is pristine.
Once I felt that the gold and white where tidy enough I could get to starting on the pink. And that was quite the adventure. First I tried dry brushing. But that ended up taking more paint off than adding it on. Then I tried to manually add paints of different shades, but it never blended quite right.
In the end I ended up doing some mix of all of the above and mainly wet blending. The below is much more like the finished result. I also cleaned up that last bit of gold. I am actually pretty happy with how smooth the blend turned out. There are several spots that arent perfect, but the more I did to fit the mistakes the more issues I ran into, so I decided to stop before I messed it up.
Last thing to do was to colour in the coxcomb on his head and varnish. I varnished the armour with satin and the wings with matte.
