Scythe – Saxony Empire

Finally, the last faction in the base game, the Saxony Empire! I did this one last because I dreaded it even more than the white. Black I can never get right. I still struggle with it and would love to master it… today is not that day, but thats okay, I was on a time crunch.

This time I did prime in black for obvious reasons. I then covered it in a dark gray, I was hoping that I could then layer on more and more black over that to create depth and make it look more like black than gray gradually. We will see how successful that turns out to be shortly.

This was kind of where I ended up with it. I did a heavy nuln oil wash and some delicate dry brushing with a brighter gray on the edges to give it some shading and dimension. I added a very bright silver to the metallic parts, nuln oil and bright dry brush to make them pop as much as possible. I had very little to add texture here so I focussed on that.

After adding some battle damage and wear and tear I added some gravel and shrubs to the base to tie it all together. Not too bad I don’t think for what it was.

The figure for the Saxony Empire is a man with a wolf. In the art the wolf is always either black or white, but I knew that this wouldn’t look great so I decided to go with more of a husky look. I primed the figure gray this time for something a little different.

It took some time and trial and error of gradually dry brushing on the huskys fur. The issue is, as you all know by now, the sculpts in this base game are not great at all and thus the animals have to texture on their fun. My goal was to gradually build it up using rough dry brushing.

Looking at it in these pics I can see some flash I didn’t catch when cleaning the figure at first…. note to self that I shouldn’t rush these things. But I think it looks really good in the end.
