Mini No. 9
Oh look another mini I wanted to paint for a friend. He is actually playing a human male inquisitor in a game, but I really wanted to paint this female orc Inquisitor. Close enough!! My friend sent me an image of what his character looks like and I tried as best as I could to match the colours of the clothing.
The image looks like he is wearing part leather armour and part copper, the mini I have is wearing full armour so I decided to go with full on copper to reflect that.
I wasn’t sure what colour I wanted to prime this mini. On the one hand I really like colours to pop, but this mini has lots of small spaces and crevices so I went with black. It would look best with black in the deeper spots to make it look like shadow in case I am unable to get there with the brush.
As usual I spent a long time blocking in the colours to see how they would look together and to ensure that I wouldn’t be completely destroying the mini with my colour choices. I think for the most part the colours actually look really good together.
This part, the washing and highlighting is usually where the final mini comes together for me. That was not the case here. I think the copper and green came out quite well. But I think the wash on the hat and cloak could be better. I struggle sometimes with washes to make them to “clean” but instead it often looks a little messy or dirty. I dont think it is bad at all, but I think it could be better and it is something to take notice of and work on for the future.
Before finishing completely I wanted to base the mini. I wanted to try something new so I took a bunch of matches and cut them into the length to fit into the base. I glued them in and then painted brown. I washed it liberally with black and then gave it a drybrush with a lighter brown to bring out some of the detail. All in all I think the base came out super well and will use this technique again for square bases.
Here she is. Im pretty happy with her. I think the colour choices worked out really well and so did the base. I did find out that I still struggle with highlighting and shading, especially fabrics and that is something to work on it the future.
